IELTS Reading: Matching Information
- B 2. C 3. F 4. A 5. E 6. D
Similar to many of the skills needed for the IELTS Reading exam, test takers should realize that Matching Information involves the skill of Scanning, recognizing synonymous language for keywords, and paraphrasing. What makes this form of question slightly awkward is the way in which you fill in your answer sheet and follow the answer key during the exam.
For example, you may be asked to read up to 6 advertisements on a similar subject, such as apartments to rent, computers, used cars, types of telephones, etc. – anything where similar details (crossover details) can be used but have some variance. The exam creators are checking your reading ability to detect differences in detail.
The practice to follow is to look at 1 advertisement only and then move your eyes from the answer statements back to the advertisement – 5 times or once for each answer statement. Then go to the second advertisement and repeat until you have 5 answers (only one answer per answer statement). Write just A, B, C, D, or E in your answer sheet.
Again, you will look for keywords in the answer statement and then search the text for those words, which may be written synonymously or paraphrased.
Procedure:
- Read 1 answer statement and find keywords
- Scan all 6 advertisements looking for keywords, perhaps synonyms or paraphrases
- Write a letter (A, B, C, D, E, F) on the answer sheet
- Move on to 2nd answer statement and repeat
